Leadership and Management
An area of career development that HR professionals spend quite a bit of time and energy on is leadership development. Organizations should have a clear understanding of effective leadership characteristics, behaviors, and competencies that will drive their business success. This is essential, because organizations need to:
- Develop those behaviors through coaching and developmental activities.
- Reward and advance employees who exemplify those behaviors.
Leadership relates to the organization's vision, keeping the mission in sight and providing direction. Leadership is the ability to influence a group or another individual toward the achievement of goals and results. The source of this influence may be formal or informal, but leadership should not be confused with status, power, or official authority.
Management on the other hand, is about coping with the day-to-day operations.
